Blue Aventurine Quartz

  Aventurine is a variety of fine-grained quartz, a so-called quartzite. Aventurines are usually colored in yellow, green, blue or cherry red colors. Sometimes one can meet almost black stones. Aventurine's main distinctive feature is its evenly spread inclusions of mica, goethite and hematite scales. Besides that, there are also some other kinds of inclusions. Moreover the rock of aventurine is pierced with cracks that are filled with iron hydroxides. These peculiarities bring this mineral a typical sparkling and golden tint and a little bit mysterious flaring shine. Thanks to this feature aventurine in old times was called a golden stone. By the name of the place of its mining, the area of Taganai mountain ridge in Ural, this mineral in past was called taganait.
Glittering glass that resembles aventurine could be done yet by ancient Egyptians. However later the secret of its producing was lost. Reddish-brown glass, imitating the coloring of aventurine was again obtained only in the 16th century by the glassblowers in the place called Murano not far from Venice when little copper filings accidentally got into the vessel with melted glass. Namely from this place in 1700 the contemporary name of the stone was obtained. (Italian avventura means occurrence). In Russia the technology of producing aventurine glass was elaborated only in the 19th century.
Aventurine is mined in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Spain, China, Norway, Chili, Russia and USA. American aventurine was named Colorado golden stone. Aventurine was also mined in China where it was popular and was called imperial stone. Small deposits of aventurine exist in Finland. Golden and brown aventurine is being found in Ural and Altai, In Russia. In the area of Kursk aventurine usually has greenish colorings. Another variety of aventurine is belorechit. Aventurine with spangles of emerald green mica was named fuchsite in the honor of German chemist and mineralogist of Munich, I.N.von Fuks. (1774 - 1856). Green aventurine mined in state of Madras, India, is known as Indian jade. In Indian state Jaipur one can find blue aventurine.

Products

In ancient China aventurine was considered as a sacred stone. It was used to cur a state stamp of Chinese emperor. Aventurine is easy to polish. In 19th century this stone was used in producing vases, candlesticks, handles of knives and forks. A huge vase made of aventurine is being kept in British Museum.
