Description

Azurite Crystals

The name of the given stone is in keeping with the word lazurite and, perhaps, it also originates from Persian word lazard - blue. In the Middle Ages this mineral was named mountain or copper blue. Later in Europe azurite was named shessylite by the name of its main deposit in the place called Shessy nearby Lyons in France. The contemporary name azurite was fixed only in 1824 by French mineralogist F. Bedan. Dense merged crystals of Azurite are found in copper-ore areas of USA, in Russia (Altai and Ural), Kazakhstan, Germany, Zaire (Africa) and Australia. Separate large crystals of this mineral are found more rarely. From the point of chemistry azurite is a copper carbonate. Its blue color is explained by iron compounds. Therefore, sometimes azurite is also called copper azure. Such compounds also present in malachite. In European painting from 15th century to 17th century the azurite was used to make popular blue paint for fresco painting, which was used more often than the painting made from lazurite. This is because lazurite gives excellent blue color and at the same time requires little expenditure of efforts and time needed to concentrate a pigment. Azurite Malachite Ring
